Ippudo Ramen Restaurant

Ippudo ramen shops are renowned for their tonkotsu broth, the richest style of this noodle soup.

Ramen Fans need not to go to Japan to experience Ippudo Ramen because they just recently opened a branch in SM Megamall Fashion Hall. The question is, are you willing to queue up for it?

After our shift, me and my colleagues decided to eat ramen for dinner and Ippudo is the first thing that came to our minds that will satisfy our ramen cravings.

Shiromaru Motoaji (P375 + 10% service charge)

Ippudo’s original tonkotsu broth served with ultra-thin noodles, pork loin, bean sprouts, kikurage, and spring onions. Classic Hakata-style ramen.

The Hakata-style noodles are springy and delightful, while the broth is refreshing and very addictive.

It is one of those moments where you find it hard to explain how something so simple can taste so delicious.

Akamaru Tamago (P420 + 10% service charge)

IPPUDO’s original tonkotsu broth enhanced with special blended miso paste and fragrant garlic oil. Served with thin noodles, pork belly, kikurage, spring onions and salted soft-boiled egg. A refined, modern-style ramen.

This is my personal favorite, which is a spicy version of the shiromaru. It’s milky with a spicy garlic kick.

Akamaru Special (P490 + 10% service charge)

Akamaru with salted soft-boiled egg, pork belly and seaweed

Karaka-Men Special (P490 + 10% service charge)

IPPUDO’s original tonkotsu broth served with thin wavy noodles, pork belly, and spring onions. The special spicy minced meat, miso paste, and fragrant garlic oil add a kick to the senses.

The Karaka-Men was a bit different. It uses a spicy miso paste like the gochugang used in Korea. It has garlic also, but I prefer the Akamaru Shin-Aji over this.

Pork Bun- (P100 + 10% service charge)

They are famous for their very soft steamed bun and flavorful braised pork.

Unlike most ramen shops around town, Ippudo’s a looker, with a design scheme that feels like a stage set, maybe for a samurai battle in an evil shogun’s futuristic fun house.

Group dinner is always the best because I’ve got to try dishes other than I ordered.

Like other ramen shops, Ippudo has its own regulars who swear by it and visit on a regular basis to satisfy their ramen cravings. While there are also others who felt that it is overrated and not as good as the one in Japan.

I think it all boils down to knowing how to manage your expectations. Ippudo has always been known as one of the best ramen shops in Japan, and this probably explains why some people go there with ridiculously high expectations and end up being disappointed.

For me, there is no doubt that Ippudo is one of the best ramen restaurants.
